Stanford began its season with a 62-7 win against Rice in a game played in Sydney. This was the second consecutive year that a Pac-12 school had its opening game in Australia, with Cal beating Hawaii in 2016.

Such neutral-site games have grown more commonplace in recent years. In addition to international venues, NFL and MLB stadiums can generate more revenue by hosting college football. Although some rivalry games such as Oklahoma-Texas, Florida-Georgia and Army-Navy are traditionally played at a neutral site, other matchups this year feature intriguing non-conference clashes that could have significant impact on which schools will qualify for the College Football Playoff.

Here is a rundown of neutral-site games involving Power 5 teams this season:

Colorado-Colorado State: September 1, 8 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network
The Rocky Mountain Showdown has been played mostly at the Denver Broncos' home stadium since 1998. The exceptions were 2004, 2005 and 2009 when the Buffaloes hosted in Boulder. Colorado ended a 10-year streak of losing seasons by winning the Pac-12 South division last year.

Arlington, Texas: AT&T Stadium

Florida-Michigan: September 2, 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC
Jim Harbaugh's job became slightly easier, as Florida coach Jim McElwain suspended seven players, including star junior receiver Antonio Calloway, for buying items with their student IDs at the campus bookstore and then reselling those items for cash. Calloway hauled in 54 catches for three touchdowns and a team-high 721 yards last season.
Arkansas-Texas A&M: September 23, Time/TV TBD
There is an interesting history to this series between old Southwest Conference members. Arkansas left for the SEC after the 1991 season, and the schools didn't face each other again until 2009 at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium. They met in 2010 and 2011 at Arlington, but after Texas A&M joined the SEC, each team hosted one game. The Arlington matchup resumed in 2014 with a contract that runs through 2024.
Baylor-Texas Tech: November 11, Time/TV TBD
This rivalry moved off-campus in 2010 to the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. It shifted to Arlington the next year and has been played there since.

Alabama-Florida State: September 2, 8 p.m. ET, ABC
The Crimson Tide, which has won four national titles with Nick Saban, starts the season ranked No. 1. It takes on Jimbo Fisher's team in another Week 1 mega showdown. The game, to be played in the Atlanta Falcons' new home, is a hot ticket with an average price of $860 that is expected to climb, if it hasn't already.
Georgia Tech-Tennessee September 4, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN
For four decades, the Yellow Jackets and Volunteers faced each other nearly every season, but the series ended in 1987. Expectations were high for Tennessee last season to win the SEC East, but it finished second to Florida.

New Orleans: Superdome

BYU-LSU: September 2, 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
This game was scheduled for NRG Stadium in Houston, but flooding from Hurricane Harvey forced a change of venue. Last season, LSU's game at Florida was postponed because of Hurricane Matthew and later rescheduled for Baton Rouge.

Indianapolis: Lucas Oil Stadium

Louisville-Purdue: September 2, 7:30 p.m. ET, Fox
Two good storylines here: Jeff Brohm, the former Louisville quarterback, makes his debut as Purdue's coach. Lamar Jackson, the current Louisville quarterback, starts his campaign to join Ohio State legend Archie Griffin as the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner.

Charlotte: Bank of America Stadium

North Carolina State-South Carolina: September 2, 3 p.m. ET, ESPN
This will be the first meeting between the Wolfpack and Gamecocks since 2009, and the first ever at a neutral site.

Landover, Maryland: FedEx Field

Virginia Tech-West Virginia: September 3, 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC
The Hokies and Mountaineers used to be Big East rivals but haven't played against each other since 2005. The last time these schools met on a neutral site was 1962 in Richmond. The prize at stake in this rivalry is the Black Diamond Trophy.

Dallas: Cotton Bowl

Oklahoma-Texas: October 14, Time/TV TBD
In one of college football's oldest rivalries, the Sooners and the Longhorns will feature new head coaches. Oklahoma's 33 year-old Lincoln Riley, the youngest head coach in the nation, will try to best Texas' new golden boy, Tom Herman, 42.

Jacksonville: EverBank Field

Florida-Georgia: October 28, 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS
With the Bulldogs and Gators having SEC title and College Football Playoff hopes, this year's installment of the long running rivalry will be a must-win for both teams. Georgia will look to win its first game since 2013 in this series -- still known to most as the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party despite official efforts to rebrand.

Bronx: Yankee Stadium

Maryland-Rutgers: November 4, Time/TV TBD
In hopes to raise its stock in the Big Ten, Rutgers will host fellow conference newcomer Maryland for a wrestling-football doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. The event, dubbed the "Big Ten Battle in the Bronx" comes at a huge cost to the Scarlet Knights. New Jersey's flagship state university had to shell out $750,000 to the Yankees to use the ballpark.

Boston: Fenway Park

Boston College-UConn: November 18, 7 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network
After losing 19-16 to Catholic rival Notre Dame two years ago, the Eagles will return to Fenway Park to host UConn. The game is the last of three college football matchups at Fenway featuring New England schools this season: Brown-Dartmouth on November 10, and UMass-Maine on November 11.

Philadelphia: Lincoln Financial Field

Hunter Martin/Getty Images Army-Navy

Army-Navy: December 9, 3 p.m. ET, CBS
This game is usually played in Philadelphia, but since 2000, Baltimore has hosted four times, including last year. The next non-Philly game in this series is scheduled for the Meadowlands in New Jersey in 2021. Last year Army beat Navy, 21-17, for the first time since 2001. Both teams are coming off bowl appearances, so expect another close game this year.
