Brazilians Taunt Hope Solo With Cries Of 'Zika!'

For six months, Hope Solo has bashed the Rio Olympics.

"If I had to make the choice today," Solo said in February, "I wouldn't go. No athlete competing in Rio should be faced with this dilemma. Female professional athletes already face many different considerations and have to make choices that male professional athletes don't."

Well, Solo ended up making the trip to Rio this week -- but not before throwing a little more shade at Rio. The USWNT goalkeeper posted her defense materials against mosquitos on social media:

Soccer is the only sport to start before Friday's Opening Ceremony. The U.S. opened with a 2-0 win Wednesday against New Zealand in Belo Horizonte, which is more than 270 miles north of Rio. Soccer will be played at several venues across Brazil during the Olympics.

In stoppage time, Brazilian fans rained a "Zika!" chant on Solo as she booted a drop kick.

You don't need to speak Portuguese to hear that.

And Brazilian fans can figure out how to interpret Solo's response.

"I'm glad the fans had fun," Solo says. "And if they had fun at my expense, more power to them."

The USWNT, the three-time defending gold medalists, finishes group play in Saturday in Belo Horizonte and Tuesday in Manaus, a city in the northwest of Brazil that is a four-hour flight from Rio. The earliest the team can play in Rio is on Aug. 16, in the semifinals. The gold-medal match is in Rio on Aug. 19.
