Michael and Boomer Phelps

Michael Phelps is going to have some help in his quest to add to his record total of 22 Olympic medals – and we're not just talking about his relay teammates.

Phelps, recently anointed as flag bearer for Team USA, is bringing to Rio a pair of Under Armour's new Architech training shoes, with soles created from 3D printing.

But while the shoes are noteworthy for their cutting-edge method of production, Phelps' pair has something even greater going for it, as seen in this Tweet by former Olympian swimmer and current announcer Rowdy Gaines:

The tiny footprint in the massive shoe is that of Phelps' newborn son, Boomer, meant to serve as "a personal reminder that Boomer is with him every step and stroke of the way," an Under Armour representative told the Baltimore Sun.

Phelps, 31, will be competing in three individual events in his final Olympics, and is also expected to swim in the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays. Assuming he advances far enough, his three individual medal races will take place on August 9 (200m butterfly), August 11 (200m individual medley) and August 12 (100m butterfly).
