April 9, 1978: Denver Nuggets star David Thompson scores 73 points on the last day of the regular season, but lost the scoring title to the San Antonio Spurs' George Gervin, who scored 63.

Thompson and Gervin were fighting for the 1978 scoring title and Gervin had the 14-point lead going into the final day.

Thompson began 13-for-14 in the first quarter, setting an NBA record. He ended up with 73, but Gervin's big game gave him the scoring title by .07 percentage points.

Both the Nuggets and Spurs made the playoffs that year.
