Sorry ladies, baseball's most eligible bachelor has said so long to the single life.

Considered by many to be MLB's most eligible bachelor over the last few years, Joe Mauer became engaged to his longtime girlfriend Madeline "Maddie" Bisanz over the weekend. The Minnesota Twins catcher proposed to his former high school classmate in Sanibel, Fla.

Mauer, 28, attended school at Cretin-Derham Hall in the Twin Cities with Bisanz, but the two didn't date at the Catholic high school in St. Paul. They've been friends for close to seven years and have gone out together for the past year and a half.

"I was hoping for a yes, and she said yes," Mauer told the Pioneer Press when he proposed. "I'm getting to marry my best friend."

Bisanz works as a nurse in St. Paul, Minn.

In 2010, Mauer signed a $184 million, eight-year contract extension to stay with his hometown Twins. The eye-popping deal is the fifth-biggest contract in Major League Baseball history, paying an average of $23 million per season. Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez (twice) are the only players with bigger contracts in hardball history.

Beyond that, forget Yogi Berra, Mike Piazza or Pudge Rodriguez, Mauer is the only catcher in Major League Baseball history to win three batting titles. Don't forget his 2009 American League Most Valuable Player award, either.

Mauer, when asked, said he doesn't believe leaving the single life will have a impact his professional baseball career. "No. (Maddie's) the one who got me through last year," Mauer said. "If anything, she's going to make me better. We were really close (friends) in '09, too."

Last season was a nightmare on the field for the former All-Star, Mauer hit just .287 with 3 homers and 30 RBI in only 82 games because of injuries.

Mauer, considered one of the most fan friendly players in baseball, parodied the classic Mean Joe Green TV spot.
