Stephen Curry and Blake Griffin, not out of the ordinary, were two of Thursday night's biggest sports stories. Curry went for 46 points on 15-for-25 shooting in a 129-116 win for the Warriors. Griffin, who is averaging 25.8 points and 9.1 rebounds this season, was ejected in the second quarter of the Clippers' 118-104 loss after his second technical foul.
And before the Clippers game even ended, Scott Van Pelt had a highlight package ready from "SVP's Vault." Nearly seven years ago, Curry and Griffin faced off in an instant NCAA basketball classic.
In 2008, Curry and Griffin were the nation's two most exciting players. Curry was fresh off his NCAA Tournament Cinderella mega-performance, when he averaged 32.0 points in Davidson's Elite Eight run. Griffin was starting a National College Player of the Year season that would see him average 22.7 points and 14.4 rebound.
Curry led the nation in scoring with 28.6 points per game. Both were All-Americans.
In their Nov. 18, 2008, meeting, Curry dropped 44 points for the No. 21 Wildcats. Griffin had 25 points and 21 rebounds to lead the No. 12 Sooners (No. 14 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll) to an 82-78 win. Griffin was the first overall pick by the Clippers in the 2009 NBA draft, while Curry dropped to the Warriors at seven.
They've had pretty good NBA careers since.
