The legacy of Jose Fernandez continues to live on as the late Miami Marlins pitcher was named National League Comeback Player of the Year at the Players' Choice Awards on Wednesday.

Fernandez died in a boating accident at age 24 on September 25. But this was not a sentimental vote. The players voted in the middle of September, weeks before Fernandez's death.

Coming off two injury-shortened seasons due to Tommy John surgery, Fernandez went 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA and 253 strikeouts in 2016. He also made his second All-Star Game.

Fernandez had at least one more scheduled start in 2016 at the time of his death.
