Cam Newton

Cam Newton always has a big cheering section in Atlanta, his hometown. When the Panthers lost their first game of the season last week at the Georgia Dome, Newton's support group grew by one.

Although Newton's newborn son did not make it to the game, his presence was on the quarterback's mind. Newton's longtime girlfriend, Kia Proctor, gave birth to a baby boy around Christmas Eve. Newton, 26, confirmed the news on Twitter Wednesday.

According to The Charlotte Observer, Newton left practice early on Thursday to make it to Atlanta, returned to Charlotte Saturday morning, only to go back to Atlanta with the team soon after. The Panthers lost, 20-13.

The Panthers have not made excuses for their lone loss, but now that this news has come to light, it could put a mental asterisk on the game. Newton, the MVP front-runner, spent his week traveling and tending to a girlfriend in labor. His focus last Sunday could have potentially been a touch off.

Now, Newton can focus again. The Panthers still have something to play for, as the 13-2 Cardinals can jump the 14-1 Panthers for the top spot in the NFC with an Arizona win and Carolina loss. The Panthers host the Buccaneers Sunday.

According to Atlanta Daily World, Newton and Proctor have been dating for approximately two years. He met her while she was working at a strip club under the name Hazel.

Against the Falcons, Newton celebrated a touchdown by pretending to rock a cradle, but he said this was not a reference to a baby.
