Kerem Demirbay

On Nov. 29, Turkish-German soccer player Kerem Demirbay, 22, made a poor choice of words. The Fortuna Düsseldorf midfielder received a second yellow card, which resulted in a red card and expulsion from the pitch, during a match against FSV Frankfurt. On the way to the locker room, he told female referee Bibiana Steinhaus that women have no place in men's soccer.

"I am extremely sorry for having said what I did to Ms. Steinhaus," Demirbay said a few days later. "I should have never said this sentence and it does not reflect my image of women." He also called Steinhaus to make a personal apology.

Fortuna Düsseldorf did not think this was atonement enough. As part of Demirbay's punishment, the German club had Demirbay officiate a junior league girls' match.

How cute are the kids holding the yellow and red card?

Demirbay was suspended three matches for his comments. He will also play his first two games back under probation.

Demirbay is at Fortuna Düsseldorf, a second-tier German team, on loan from Hamburger SV, a first-tier team. He scored twice in the same match he made comments to Steinhaus.
