John Tavares

John Tavares was born September 20, 1990.

Tavares was the first overall pick in the 2009 NHL draft and became Islanders captain at the start of the 2013-14 season.

Tavares won a gold medal with Canada at the 2014 Olympics but sustained a season-ending knee injury in the quarterfinals against Latvia.

He returned for the 2014-15 season and played all 82 games. The centerman posted 38 goals and 48 assists for 86 points, one behind Jamie Benn of Dallas for the scoring title. In the voting for the Hart Trophy as league MVP, Tavares placed third behind Canadiens goalie Carey Price and Capitals sniper Alexander Ovechkin.
