September 18, 2004: Auburn has its tightest game of the season, a 10-9 win against defending co-national champion LSU.

Auburn finished the season 13-0, with just two other games having a winning margin in single digits. The Tigers beat Alabama 21-13 in the regular-season finale and Virginia Tech 16-13 in the Sugar Bowl.

The difference in the game against LSU was a missed extra point. LSU led 9-3. Then Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Courtney Taylor with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter.

Despite winning every game and the SEC championship, Auburn finished third in the final BCS rankings, which put USC and Oklahoma in the national title game at the Orange Bowl. The Trojans won in a romp to take the championship, which was later stripped as part of NCAA sanctions.
