The myth that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school team as a sophomore has been debunked in recent years. Jordan didn't make the varsity as a 10th-grader, but he was the star of the JV team at Laney High in Wilmington, N.C.

As one of the Laney assistant coaches from that era, Fred Lynch, told the Charlotte Observer in 2009, shortly before Jordan's induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame: "The Hollywood version is that Mike got cut, came back the next year, and was great. That's not true. ... It was never a situation where Mike was ever a bad player."
