June 27, 2001: The Washington Wizards select Kwame Brown with the first pick in the NBA draft.

Brown, a center from Georgia, becomes the first high school player to be taken No. 1 overall. In 2000, the Clippers had taken Darius Miles at third overall.

After the Wizards took Brown, another high school player went next. The Clippers picked center Tyson Chandler from Dominguez High School in Compton, California, and immediately traded him to the Bulls for Elton Brand.

The third pick in 2001, Pau Gasol by Memphis, also made history. He was the highest selection for a player who hadn't played high school or college ball in the U.S.
