May 7, 1977: Seattle Slew takes the Kentucky Derby for the first win of the horse's eventual Triple Crown run.

Seattle Slew came into the race as the 1-2 favorite, but struggled at the start, swerving a losing ground on the leaders. However, jockey Jean Cruguet recovered and Seattle Slew beat Run Dusty Run by almost two lengths to win.

Seattle Slew won the Preakness Stakes by over a length and pulled away from the group to win the Triple Crown by four lengths at the Belmont Stakes.
