April 11, 1989: Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ron Hextall scores a playoff goal. He did it in spectacular fashion, hitting the empty-netter in a playoff game against the Washington Capitals.

Hextall had already scored the first goal on a shot by an NHL goalie. (Billy Smith of the Islanders was the first credited with a goal. The opponent committed an own goal, and Smith was the last Islander to have touched the puck before it went into the net.) Against the Capitals, Hextall took a shot with his team up 7-5.

The Flyers made the conference finals that year, but eventually lost to the Montreal Canadiens.
