March 19, 2006: George Mason shocks the country with a 65-60 win over defending champion North Carolina.

The Patriots came into the tournament as a No. 11 seed, a spot many debated leading up to the first-round game against Michigan State. However, after George Mason beat the Spartans, that criticism quieted.

George Mason continued its run, led by Lamar Butler, who scored 18 points and helped his team erase a seven-point halftime deficit. It beat a North Carolina team that featured Tyler Hansbrough, David Noel and Danny Green.

George Mason continued its historic streak with wins over Wichita State and No. 1 seed Connecticut to advance to the Final Four. The run ended with a loss to eventual champion Florida.
