Landon Timothy Donovan was born March 4, 1982.

Donovan announced in August that he would retire from professional soccer. He leaves behind one of the most illustrious careers in the history of American soccer.

He's No. 1 in the MLS in goals (144) and assists (136) and is at the top of the list in the same categories for the Men's National Team. He appeared in three World Cups, where the U.S. made the knockout stage twice.

And let's not forget this moment from 2010.

This goal ignited the nation, where soccer fandom is still in its infancy.
