James Joseph "Jim" Harbaugh was born on December 23, 1963, in Toledo, Ohio. Harbaugh grew up eating and breathing the football life. His father Jack was a football coach, including assistant coach at Michigan and Stanford.

After starring at the University of Michigan as a quarterback, Harbaugh was the Bears' first-round pick in 1987. He went on to play 14 years in the NFL, with Chicago from 1987 to 1993, Indianapolis Colts from 1994 to 1997, Baltimore Ravens in 1998 and San Diego Chargers in 1999 and 2000. After the NFL, Harbaugh has made his name in the coaching ranks since 2004. He spent his first three seasons at the University of San Diego and then turned the Stanford football program around starting in 2007.
