After a very public (and adorable) relationship, Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy have had to deal with a very public (and agonizing) breakup.

Shortly after sending out wedding invites, the golf star called off the engagement, leaving many to wonder what went wrong.

McIlroy issued a statement in which he explained his thought process and took the blame for the ordeal.

“The problem is mine,” McIlroy said. “The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”

Wozniacki, meanwhile, ended her silence about the breakup on Twitter.

In her message the 23-year-old, a fan of the soccer team Liverpool, included a reference to the club's famed anthem, "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Wozniacki also updated her Twitter bio and avatar to expunge any references to McIlroy (images via For The Win).

Interestingly, Wozniacki scrubbed McIlroy from her profile but kept the couple's dog, Bruno. Perhaps that means Wozniacki will be keeping the Pomeranian.

Serena Williams, Wozniacki's friend and sometimes competitor, responded with these words of encouragement:

It's nice to see Williams supporting Wozniacki, and this probably means that bettors can look past Williams as McIlroy's next girlfriend (an Irish bookmaker had her at 100-to-1 odds).
