The 1987 NCAA tournament was the first that included the three-point shot. Providence coach Rick Pitino was among the first to embrace the shot as a weapon, and the Friars advanced to the Final Four before losing to Syracuse in the national semifinals. In the championship game against the Orangemen, Indiana's Steve Alford made seven three-pointers. But with the game on the line, it was neither Alford nor a three-pointer that pushed the Hoosiers over the top. The dramatic finish still haunts Syracuse center Rony Seikaly.
