It takes a special breed of fan to tailgate when it's usually more than 100 degrees outside. Such is the case at Arizona State in Tempe, where many of the games are scheduled to start after sundown, but the pre-game partying can be a real roasting experience.

This is why former Sun Devil quarterback Jeff Van Raaphorst draws a distinction between the ASU faithful and those from California schools.

"These are tough people out here," says Van Raaphorst, who led the team to its lone Rose Bowl win in 1987.
