The Duchess of Cambridge likes to play coy.

The former Kate Middleton was out promoting the Olympics on Thursday and stopped by for a little field hockey with the British women's team. But faced with the opportunity to take a couple shots, she under-promoted her skill.

"This is going to be so embarrassing," she said. "My brain thinks I can do all these wonderful things but my body just doesn’t play ball."

None of the journalists, team members or fans on hand at Olympic Park bought it though, considering how well known her resume is around her home country. Kate captained her field hockey team at Marlborough College, but pressed the point that she hadn't touched a stick in some time.

"I was really looking forward to coming here, but now I am here and have discovered I have to play, I am not feeling so confident," she said.

If she was trying not to stand out, the ensemble that included salmon-colored jeans against the bright blue field was not helping. Still, Kate squared up and ripped shots into the back of the net like she was in midseason form. It was enough to impress the current captain.

"She told me that she missed playing as part of a team," Kate Walsh said. "She also told me that she used to hit the penalty corners and you could see that. She got low and her shots were really sweet."

While the Duchess tried to drum up some attention for her country, the U.S. women's field hockey team has already secured a berth at the Olympics this summer. In October, it stunned the defending world champion Argentineans 4-2 in the gold medal match at the Pan American Games, giving the U.S. an automatic bid to London.

Just as Kate will serve as ambassador for her country's participants, Michelle Obama will similarly lead the U.S. delegation to the opening ceremonies. The First Lady recently took a couple former Olympians to rally some Washington, D.C.-area school children around sports.

Lisa Leslie and Dominique Dawes helped her cheer on kids through a rotation of basketball, tennis and soccer.

No word on whether or not Obama attempted any bicycle kicks herself, though.
