When cliff divers hit the air from 27 meters high, the trip down gains speed fast. In the three seconds it takes from them to splash down, their speed reaches about 53 miles per hour. As diver Steve LoBue puts it, "You can hear the acceleration and that's what's a little bit scary."
That element of fear is also part of the attraction to this sport.
"It's such a rush," says Orlando Duque. "It is a lot of fun. You feel the blood pumping."
