Sports fans and film buffs alike will be glad to hear that a pair of Hollywood big shots are teaming up to produce a comedy centered around female football fans.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Universal Pictures has picked up a project spearheaded by producers Laura Dern and Judd Apatow about a group of women who are obsessed with America's most popular sport.

Dern is an actress, director and producer who has acted in The Master, The Fault in Our Stars, Jurassic Park along with a host of other films. Apatow is mostly known for directing, producing and writing. His long list of credits includes films like Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old Virgin and TV shows like Freaks and Geeks and Girls.

Apatow is quite familiar with female-driven comedy, as he produced the 2011 hit Bridesmaides and he wrote, directed and produced the upcoming comedy Trainwreck, starring Amy Schumer (and featuring a cameo from LeBron James).

It's not hard to see why studios would be interested in picking up a female-driven comedy centering around football. Women fans represent 45 percent of the NFL's fanbase and have been called "pro football’s most important demographic." There are even charts depicting which jerseys are most popular for women in each state.

Among fantasy football players, female participation jumped 10 percent from 2012 to 2013.

Not much is known about Dern and Apatow's project, but The Hollywood Reporter noted the team enlisted Pam Brady, a longtime writer on South Park, to pen the screenplay.
