LeBron James' signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers is a victory for the heartland. With the ability to choose his destination, James chose to head back to his first home in the Midwest.
Another individual who knows about life in a middle-to-small market is recording artist Skylar Grey. The 28-year-old was born in Mazomanie, Wisconsin. She spent her childhood touring the Midwest with her mother as a folk duo called "Generations."
One of Grey's most notable performances can be found in the 2010 single "Coming Home" by Diddy-Dirty Money. Grey co-wrote the song and her vocals are featured.
On Friday, Grey re-wrote her verse. In a tribute to James, Grey wrote a remix about returning home to Cleveland. She posted the video on her YouTube page:
It did not take long for Grey's vocals to be ripped onto other YouTube videos. One notable video is this mash-up of Grey's remix and past LeBron James Nike commercials (on both the Cavaliers and Heat). The video is uploaded by YouTube user Matthew A. Cherry:
On a side note, this is not the first time "Coming Home" has been used to welcome an NBA star to their home city. In February 2011, as a promo for Carmelo Anthony's New York Knicks' debut, the team created a commercial with the song. Anthony re-signed with the Knicks on Sunday.
James signed a two-year, $42.1 million contract with the Cavaliers on Saturday.
