The 2013 season, in which the Kansas City Royals showed significant improvement and finished 10 games above .500, was even more productive than the team or its fans thought.

It turns out that Kansas City inspired Lorde, the 17-year-old singer from New Zealand, as she wrote the chart-topping hit "Royals." The song has been at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks.

In an interview with VH1, Lorde explains how seeing a picture of a player in a Kansas City uniform got her thinking about an idea for a song.

The Royals themselves were happy to hear the news.

For those who are unfamiliar, here's the music video for Lorde's chart-topping tune.
