All 12-year-old Reginald Wells did was make a joke. It was about one of his teacher's favorite football team. But, Reginald says, the teacher didn't find the wisecrack all that funny.

Reginald says he recently bumped into the assistant teacher from his math class and stopped to tell him a joke. According to Reginald, the teacher hit his shoulder. Then Reginald pushed the teacher's shoulder. The teacher responded by punching Reginald in the face, knocking him unconscious.

"The left side of my face was numb... my lip hurt... my head was hurt, like it had been shaken," Reginald, who is 4-foot-11 and 80 pounds, told 12News.

But apparently that's not all that happened. Reginald's mother, Adrianne, says she got an even uglier account of the story.

"(The principal) said Reginald was punched, in the shoulder, and then hit two times and uppercut, and then slid across the floor," Adrianne said. "It weighed heavy on my heart, because I've never put my hands on my son."

The teacher was fired on the spot, but Adrianne says she's upset that he wasn't arrested. She is seeking representation and plans to file charges against the teacher.

The 12News report did not cite which team happened to be the teacher's favorite.
