From the same ECHL team that gave us Dick Cheney Hunting Vest Night and Rod Blagojevich Prison Uniform Night comes another hilariously unbelievable sports promotion.
The Las Vegas Wranglers beat the Ontario Reign by a score of 3-2 in the Indoor Winter Classic on Tuesday, a first-of-its-kind event in which the Wranglers attempted to simulate the atmosphere of an outdoor game. The NHL's annual outdoor Winter Classic on New Year's Day, which would have been in Michigan Stadium this year, has been among the game's wiped out by the owners' lockout.
The Wranglers kept the doors to their arena open during the game and even had fake snow fall from the rafters. The Wranglers wore throwback jerseys and an embroidered logo patch that will be auctioned to the public.
The Wranglers' prize for winning the game was a goofy-looking trophy that the organization created with all of $29. The award (right) features a bobble-head doll of the Wranglers' mascot, Duke, standing on a platform which has two dollar signs and a large lock and chain (a nod to the NHL lockout).
And while it's not exactly the most impressive piece of hardware, the trophy might have actually provided the Wranglers with some more motivation.
"The trophy arrived early Sunday morning," Wranglers President and Chief Operating Officer Billy Johnson said before the game. "No one on our team went near it, which -- if tradition is to be believed -- tells me they really want to win it."
