Many have tried, but few athletes have succeeded in crossing over from sports star to movie giant.

Tom Cruise thinks he's got just what it take to make soccer sensation David Beckham a box office god in Hollywood. The Mission Impossible star says he's "desperately searching" for the right script that will set Becks up for a career in the film business.

Don't expect Beckham to be the next Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell, though. More like Pierce Brosnan or Roger Moore.

"I'd love to do action movies with Beckham. He would be great, he could kick ass," Cruise told the London Mirror.

What about Cruise setting Beckham up in a soccer film?

"David would have to teach me to play soccer first," Cruise told the Mirror.

Beckham and Cruise have been buddies for a number of years. The actor sent the velvet jacket he wore in the 1994 film "Jerry Maguire" to Beckham after learning that he and his now wife Victoria watched the movie on their very first date.

With a net worth of $175 million, Beckham, 36, doesn't need the money. However, with his soccer career winding down, it would be a great way to stay in the public eye.

The Mirror reports Beckham will only take the film advice of Cruise, if he even considers a career in Hollywood.
