Because giving away free bacon is so last week, fans who attend the Louisville women's basketball team's game against LSU will get free beer.

Coach Jeff Walz will cover the first beer for $2,500 fans Thursday at the KFC Yum! Center. Thursday happens to be $2 beer night, so that amounts to a $5,000 gift from Walz.

"It's a little way to say thanks to all our adults who come and support us," Walz said, "and we're just trying to get some of our fans who haven't come out to come on out one time and get a drink and enjoy the ballgame and hopefully grab the attention of a few more fans."

Louisville, which lost to UConn in April's national championship game, is playing LSU in the semifinals of the preseason WNIT.

The Cardinals aren't the only team to attempt to entice fans to a game by offering free food or drink. Kansas State's women's basketball team recently gave away 300 pounds of bacon to students attending its season opener against Tennessee State.

Walz joked that bacon was a little too unhealthy for his consideration.

"We don't need any bacon," Walz said. "… We're more hummus around here, health food. Fried asparagus for the next game, a tofu burger."
