Some of the medal winners at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi will take a little bit of the meteor that crashed down in Russia with them.
According to a report by R-Sport, the medals awarded on Feb. 15, 2014 (the anniversary of when the meteor struck), will include a fragment.
"We will hand out our medals to all the athletes who will win gold on that day, because both the meteorite strike and the Olympic Games are the global events," Chelyabinsk Region Culture Minister Alexei Betekhtin said in a statement.
The medals, according to the news service, were made by four Russian designers working for the American company Leo Burnett and will be produced by Russian jeweler Adamas. There will be 1,300 total medals manufactured to be awarded at the Games.
The meteor, which was caught in startling video, damaged buildings and injured hundreds.
"I looked out the window and saw a huge line of smoke, like you get from a plane but many times bigger," a local witness told the BBC at the time. "A few minutes later the window suddenly came open and there was a huge explosion, followed by lots of little explosions. It felt like a war zone and it lasted about 20 to 30 minutes."
