For one pooch in upstate New York, the dog days came in the winter rather than the summer this year.

Maggie, a 17-year-old Labrador/Springer mix, wandered away from her home in Dundee, N.Y., on the day after Christmas. Her sight is poor, and after a few days, her owner feared for the worst.

But thanks to an 11-year-old boy and his unique turkey call, everything turned out all right.

Austin Gibson was practicing the call this week when on a local snowbank when he noticed an animal in the distance. He told his dad, and together they rescued the dog.

It turns out that canine was Maggie. While she has lost much of her sight, she could still hear the turkey call and reacted to it.
