Ed Whitlock

Ed Whitlock is 85, but he's probably faster than you are.

On Sunday, the Milton, Ontario, man cruised to a 3:56:33 marathon at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. He shattered the previous 85-89 age group world record of 4:34:55, set in 2004. Breaking records is nothing new for Whitlock, who holds 36 world records from the road and track, completing this most recent race in a 30-year-old blue singlet and a pair of 15-year-old Brooks running shoes.

That's a sub-4 marathon for 85-YEAR-OLD Ed Whitlock! Incredible. Massive WR and 3:56 officially!

Back in 2003, Whitlock became the first 70-year-old to break three hours in a marathon, doing so as a 72-year-old at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon with a time of 2:59:10. On Sunday, Whitlock maintained an overall average pace of 9:01 per mile on the same course.

Whitlock's age-graded time equates to a 2:08 marathon. Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge won a marathon gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics with a time of 2:08:44.

Good for Ed, also known as "The Master." Whitlock may run again, although he is skeptical about competing with his record.

"I don't want to disgrace myself, I suppose," he says.

Whitlock's got jokes too.
